By Durrani Mazlan & Sofia Nasir They say that an alter ego is like a second self, one that is far from the real ‘you’. There is a connotation that this side is somehow… bad. Look at Jekyll and Hyde. Hyde was a psychopath dwelling in the same body of the sensible Doctor Jekyll. And Natalie Portman's character in Black Swan – she strove so hard for perfection, yet her alter ego led to her own demise. It's no wonder people have such ugly thoughts about these perceived selves as all things evil. |
There is no doubt that social media has shaped our consciousness as an individual. Unknowingly, we are creating a second self. Imagine a world where we are actually somebody who possess individuality and serve a bigger purpose in life. That world is now possible with the advent of online platforms, where we choose what the world sees and hide the trivialities that belong in neither worlds.
Some get carried away. Others forsake their realities to pursue this offline persona. Again, another grim view of what alter egos bring. But what if we told you it doesn't need to be that way?

Trying to impress the virtual world, we end up neglecting our true selves.
